Plymouth's new dental school has opened its doors to its first group of students.

The Peninsula Dental School, which will train 64 dentists each year, is the first new dental school in the UK for 40 years.

They will train at the city's university campus initially and then at new facilities being built in Devonport and also Truro and Exeter.

Some 188 people applied for the first 64 places on the four-year course.

The dean of the school, Prof Liz Kay, said: "We are thrilled, delighted and excited that our first day has finally arrived.

"The quality and achievements of our first students are outstanding, and we are confident that we have the right calibre of student to get the course off to a flying start."

The Peninsula Dental School was established as a partnership between the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth and the NHS in Devon and Cornwall.
