Plymouth Museum and Art Gallery has secured a £39,000 grant from Arts Council England to support new works.
The Human Cargo exhibition has been developed in partnership with the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter, and the National Portrait Gallery.
It marks the 200th anniversary of the 1807 Act of Abolition, which made the transatlantic slave trade illegal.
The exhibition will be on display from 22 September until 24 November and will feature a range of historical objects.
It will also feature information about Plymouth and Devon's involvement in the development of the slave trade and the abolition movement.
