US servicemen to get own memorial
D-Day landings
The D-Day landings were a turning point in World War II
A fundraising event is taking place to raise money for a memorial for American servicemen killed in training for D-Day off the south Devon coast.

The servicemen were preparing for the invasion of the Normandy beaches in an exercise off Slapton Sands when they were attacked by German E-Boats.

World War II veterans now want a memorial naming all those who lost their lives in Exercise Tiger.

A Sherman tank involved in the landings is on display in Torcross car park.

John Casson, who was involved with the preservation of the tank, said: "This is the first such fundraising event relating to Exercise Tiger.

"It will no doubt attract those who have an interest in military vehicles and local history, young and old alike".

There are events being held on both Saturday and Sunday.
