Sunbathers rescued from high tide
Teenagers had to be rescued after becoming stuck in a rising tide while sunbathing by a Devon river.

The pair became stuck beside the River Otter near Budleigh Salterton where there was a very strong current.

One of the boys did not know how to swim. They were helped to safety after a member of the public called the emergency services.

The boys, from Newton Poppleford, were said to be suffering from the cold but were uninjured.

Police assisted on the scene and the Sidmouth lifeboat brought the boys to the East End beach where they were treated by paramedics.

The boys were warned about their choice of sunbathing locations.

Sgt Mat Helm from Exmouth police said: "With the weather improving beach users must be aware of the sea and estuaries around them.

"There are currents and tides that many people don't understand that can easily catch people out. Locals and holidaymakers alike need to keep a sensible approach around our coastline."
