Long-term housing needs outlined

More than 1,200 new homes are needed in west Devon to meet government targets in the next 20 years, new reports say.

The figures have been revealed in two West Devon Borough Council planning documents which have gone out for public consultation.

The report says the bulk of development should be in two towns, with 650 homes in Okehampton and 300 in Tavistock.

Smaller scale developments are planned for Hatherleigh, North Tawton and various villages.

About 130 houses would be built in the villages of Bridestowe, Buckland Monachorum, Crapstone, Exbourne, Folly Gate, Lewdown, Lamerton, Lifton, Milton Abbot and Northlew.

The housing needs are outlined in the West Devon Core Strategy, a local planning document on the challenges facing the borough up to 2026.

The council's Site Allocations Issues and Options document suggested specific sites.

Government estimates of housing need suggest that by 2026, 3,800 new homes must be built in West Devon.

Around 2,600 houses have already been built or are allocated.
