Strike to hit Devonport navy yard
Union protest
Strikes will also hit Faslane and MoD headquarters in London
Some Ministry of Defence (MoD) staff at Devonport navy dockyard in Plymouth are expected to strike in a row over pay and conditions.

The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) said the one-day walkout will happen this Friday.

The action follows a below inflation pay rise of 2.5%.

About 16,500 MoD staff at Devonport and the Faslane submarine base in Scotland as well as MoD headquarters in London will be on strike.

Rise 'scandalous'

Several thousand passport office workers will also be on strike.

The PCS held a previous 24-hour walkout on 31 January when Job Centres, benefit offices, courts, driving examinations and many other services were affected.

General secretary Mark Serwotka said: "Civil servants are amongst the lowest paid in the public sector with thousands earning just above the minimum wage and a quarter earning less than £15,400.

"It is scandalous that whilst the rest of the economy enjoys pay rises in line with inflation that the government and civil service management seek to impose a real terms pay cut for the people who keep this country running."
