Man charged with woman's murder
A man has been charged with the murder of a 70-year-old woman who died from multiple head injuries after being attacked in a Devon village.

Phyliss Deane, from Newton Abbot, was attacked in Shaldon on Saturday and was airlifted to Plymouth's Derriford Hospital where she later died.

Russell Deane, 25, from Torquay, who is known the victim, was arrested and remains in custody.

He is due to appear before Torquay Magistrates on Wednesday.

Officers will ask for him to be remanded in custody.

A post-mortem examination found the victim had died from multiple head injuries.

Det Ch Insp Steve Carey said: "This was a serious attack but police wish to stress the suspect and the deceased were known to each other."
