University students have been paying tribute to an 18-year-old man who was found dead in Exeter.

The Exeter University student was named by police as Gavin Britton, of Southampton.

His body was found on Gandy Street in Exeter on Tuesday and a post-mortem examination is due to be carried out later.

Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious but an investigation had begun into the cause.

'No sense'

His body was formally identified by his parents on Thursday.

The first-year student enjoyed playing golf and was a Southampton FC supporter.

Friends have been posting messages to Gavin's MySpace page.

"I can't believe you're gone, it makes no sense," wrote one friend.

Another said: "Everyone knows you're a great guy mate, you're going to be greatly missed. RIP. Thoughts are really with your family right now."
