Volunteer police officer injured
A volunteer police officer has been taken to hospital after being assaulted in north Devon.

The special constable was injured while four officers were arresting a man in Barnstaple after police responded to a report of criminal damage in Town Walk.

He was taken to North Devon District Hospital after being bitten on the hand and kicked in the face by the suspect.

The three other male officers sustained grazes and bruising. A 23-year-old man was arrested.

The incident happened at about 0800 BST on Friday.

The special constable was later released from the accident and emergency ward after hospital staff treated his injuries. The three other officers did not require medical treatment.
