The event is believed to have begun as a pagan ritual

A centuries-old tradition of rolling flaming tar-barrels down a Devon street has been saved.
The event at Ottery St Mary's carnival on 4 November appeared to be under threat after its insurer pulled out.
After a nationwide appeal, the organisers have obtained £5m public liability insurance from another company to cover the event.
Organisers of the 400-year-old tradition thanked everyone who helped with their bid to find an underwriter.
The event raises thousands of pounds for charity and attracts people from around the world.
