A Polish bus driver has admitted causing the death of a Devon student while driving her home from college.

Robert Botur lost control of his bus on the A377 in January, killing Anita Quartly, 17, from Chawleigh.

Miss Quartly was a passenger on the coach when it was involved in the collision with a car between Lapford and Copplestone. She died at the scene.

Botur, 35, was told at Exeter Crown Court he was likely to go to prison when he is sentenced in October.

'Not survivable'

Miss Quartly attended Chulmleigh Community College, where she was studying to become an occupational therapist.

Botur, who was living in Chulmleigh at the time, was granted bail by Judge Miranda Robertshaw while pre-sentencing reports were prepared after he pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

But she told him he should not take it as meaning he would not receive a custodial sentence.

She said: "You should expect a significant period of immediate prison."

The teenage victim was a passenger on a single-decker coach being driven on the wrong side of the road by Botur.

He collided with an oncoming car and the 30-seat coach left the carriageway and toppled down a bank.

In the crash, Miss Quartly sustained fractures to her skull, brain damage and cuts to her head.

Home Office pathologist Dr Guyan Fernando said the injuries suffered by Miss Quartly were "not survivable".

Other passengers on the bus also sustained injuries.
