Turbines to put wind up aquarium

The aquarium says the turbines are virtually silent

Plymouth's National Marine Aquarium has unveiled two new wind turbines which will power the attraction's latest exhibition, Explorocean.

The new turbines, each 15m (50ft) high, form part of the Aquarium's new £3.6m project which opens in March.

It will include exhibits highlighting different types of sustainable ocean-based energies.

They will be a permanent fixture at Ocean Sculpture Park, situated on the Plaza in front of the aquarium.

The aquarium's director, Kelvin Boot, said: "These wind turbines are not only educational, in terms of teaching people how renewable energy works, but they are also working for us.

"They have the potential to produce electricity for the whole of Explorocean, along with our photovoltaic [solar panel] roof."

The aquarium says the turbines, funded by the Millennium Commission and Grant Aid, are virtually silent as they do not have a gear box.
