Car traps woman against window

Police have appealed for witnesses to the crash

A 21-year-old woman was "lucky to be alive" police said after a car pinned her against a supermarket window following a crash.

A Peugeot 306 careered into Somerfield in Mutley Plain, Plymouth, early on Wednesday evening after a collision with a van.

A woman who was walking by was trapped by the front of the store's window, which was smashed.

She and another 21-year-old pedestrian escaped with minor injuries.

'Extremely lucky'

The occupants of the car and the van were uninjured after the crash at 1920 GMT.

Pc Clint Cox told BBC News: "One woman was pushed against the window.

"She was extremely lucky. It could have been fatal."

Somerfield cashier Tony Chanter, 20, said: "There was a huge crash as the car hit the window. I thought it was going to come right through.

"Everyone is still in a state of shock."

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident.
