A nightclub owner in Devon seaside resort Torbay has hit out at critics of his new pole dancing club.
The council fears an influx of stag parties in the family resort
Jim Willicott's club, Bar One in Paignton, has become the first in Torbay to offer pole dancing.
But Councillor Jeanette Richards says pole dancing is not the right thing for a family resort such as Torbay.
Mr Willicott said the town's holiday industry was on its knees and desperately needed new attractions to survive in a competitive market.
He said: "All the council want to talk about is coach-loads of elderly people coming down.
"They don't want the stag weekends and the hen parties.
"But we rely on the holiday trade and we have to evolve with the rest of the country and the rest of the world.
"All the holidaymakers have these facilities at home and when they come down here they expect the same."
Ms Richards, a senior cabinet member on Torbay Council, said: "I don't have a problem with it, personally. I think I'm old enough now to realise that there's room for everything in this world.
"But I think if it encouraged more stag parties then that would not be good for our tourism."
Paignton is the only place in Devon apart from Plymouth that has a pole dancing club.
Bar One dancer Allison Fey said: "They are not downmarket, they are aimed at businessmen and the upper class of the market.
"It is not degrading at all. I really enjoy my job. It's very liberating."
