Post office plans before council

Post Office Ltd said branches were already in several shops
Controversial plans to close a Devon town's main post office and move it to premises on the edge of town are to go before district councillors.

Planning officers are recommending the plan to move Newton Abbot's Post Office from Market Square to a Costcutter store on Queen Street.

The town council says the plan would cause traffic chaos and residents say it would cut local services.

Post Office Ltd said the move would secure local post office provision.

Post Office Ltd said the Costcutter chain already ran other post office branches in the South West.

Town councillor Daphne Watson said she could not believe the traffic implications of the scheme had "been ignored".

The company said customers were changing the way in which they used post office services and it had a duty to respond to that.
