New landing stage for waterfront
Plymouth Hoe
The new landing stage will serve existing ferries
Plans for a new landing stage for Plymouth's Barbican have been agreed.

The landing stage, set to be connected to Commercial Wharf, will serve existing ferries and allow for an expansion of water transport.

It will replace the landings at the Mayflower Steps and Phoenix Wharf - neither of which have disabled access.

The scheme will cost about £900,000 of which £700,000 has already been found. It is hoped the remainder will come from the Single Regeneration budget.

'Exciting development'

The city council says more water transport will provide an alternative to road use.

Councillor Peter Smith said: "This is an extremely exciting development. It will allow tourists to arrive straight in the heart of the Barbican and is just a stone's throw away from the Mayflower Steps.

"It is also important to people locally as it will not only mean we can use the water more as an alternative to the roads, but it is also a chance to improve the waterfront and invest in the economy of this area."

An exhibition of the plans is to be held at the Mayflower Visitor Centre starting on Wednesday and running for a fortnight.
