Plans for hundreds of new homes in Millbay have been approved by Plymouth City Council.
One application at the former Vospers car dealership will see 10 houses and 126 flats built on five storeys.
The other, on the former Millbay Laundry site, is for about 30 houses and 90 flats plus office space.
The city's planning committee was told the quality of the architectural design of the buildings is high and will set a benchmark for subsequent applications.
The developers, English Cities Fund, say the projects will play a key role in the area's regeneration and that work will start in the autumn.
