Tower provides amateur radio base

Radio amateurs are trying to contact other lighthouses

Amateur radio operators have set up a temporary station at Plymouth's Smeaton's Tower.

It is part of the International Lighthouses On The Air event taking place this weekend.

They are trying to make contact with as many other lighthouses across the world as possible, including those in the UK.

Christopher Wingate, chairman of the Plymouth Amateur Radio Society, said it was the first time Smeaton's Tower had been used for the event.

"We will be talking to any other licensed radio amateurs who want to call us," he said.

"We are aiming for contact with places like Australia and New Zealand, and even Indonesia if we are lucky.

"If we make contact with any lighthouses, that would be the icing on the cake."
