Thousands of people gathered around Plymouth Sound on Tuesday night to watch the first three teams compete in the National Fireworks Championships.
This is the seventh year the championships have been fought in the air above Plymouth.
Six firework companies will be competing in the event.
Each will be given 10 minutes to show their wares.
Prestigious event
On Wednesay night it is the turn of three more companies to make their bid for the title.
The city council describes the event the most prestigious on Plymouth's calender
Fireworks worth thousands of pounds are used in the battle with a panel of technical judges and dignitaries charged with choosing the winner.
Points will be awarded for rhythm, continuity, pattern, creation and use of colour as well as the reaction of the crowd.
The winner goes through to represent Britain in an international competition.
The fireworks are let off from pontoons in Plymouth Sound and many people go out on boats to watch the extravaganza.
During the event, an exclusion zone is set up 100 metres to the north and south of the Mountbatten breakwater to safeguard shipping and prevent boats getting too close.
