Drivers have been warned breath-testing will be carried out round the clock as part of Derbyshire Police's festive drinking and driving crackdown. Officers have warned motorists they might still be over the limit the morning after a night out. Supt Gary Parkin said:"Alcohol does not disappear from your system just because you've slept for a few hours." He advised revellers to name a designated driver who does not drink, or use public transport or taxis. Supt Parkin said: "Drink and drug driving are a continuing menace on our roads and blight the lives of too many families every year. "There are still far too many who are prepared to risk the safety of themselves and others during the festive season." The campaign is supported by the Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership. Police said 216 people were caught drinking and driving over the Christmas and New Year period last year. About 4,590 motorists were breathalysed by officers between 1 December 2008 and 1 January 2009.
