Call to improve car park security

Calls have been made to improve security at a park-and-ride facility used by University of Derby students.

Students can pay £50-a-year to park at Markeaton Park and take a shuttle bus to the Kedleston Road Campus.

Derby City Council's Labour group leader Chris Williamson said better lighting was needed to improve safety for drivers walking back to their cars.

The university, which runs the shuttle bus, said there were plans to install high-standard lighting.

A university spokesman said it had paid £18,000 from its own budget to install CCTV at the council-owned car park and a university security guard was deployed at the site from after dark until 6.15pm.

Councillor Williamson said: "It is an isolated car park, a lot of young people are now using it and, if an incident were to take place - and one incident is one incident too many - then they are very, very vulnerable."
