Ambulance crash kills man and boy

A man and a 10-year-old boy have died after a car collided with an ambulance on a Derbyshire road.

The crash, which involved a Ford Escort, happened on the A619 Baslow Road in Chesterfield at about 1500 GMT on Saturday.

The male passenger in the Ford Escort suffered fatal injuries and the boy, who was a rear seat passenger, has now died from his injuries.

The ambulance was not answering an emergency call.

An East Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "The ambulance was conveying a patient to hospital but was not under emergency conditions when the accident happened.

"We have no reason to think that the driver of our vehicle was at fault. Police are currently investigating the accident and so we are unable to comment further.

"We would like to offer our deepest sympathies to the relatives and friends of those involved at this very sad time."

Police have appealed for witnesses.
