Work aims to tackle M1 congestion

Work to help reduce congestion and improve safety on an 11-mile stretch of the M1 in Derbyshire is due to begin.

Improvements include strengthening and resurfacing the hard shoulder and sections of lane one between Tibshelf service area and junction 30.

The work is in preparation for opening up the hard shoulder to traffic during peak times.

The Highways Agency said the majority of work will take place overnight starting on Monday.

Speed limits will be in place while the improvements - which are due to be completed by February 2010 - are carried out.

Some closures of entry and exit slip roads will be in place and diversion routes set up.
