Homes evacuated after explosion

A number of people were evacuated from their homes following an explosion on an industrial site in north Derbyshire.

The blast happened at a plastics factory on Station Street, Birch Vale, High Peak.

Emergency services were called at about 1845 BST on Friday. Nearby roads have been cordoned off.

Police said: "Emergency services responded to numerous calls concerning an explosion. Some local residents are being evacuated as a precaution."

Local residents reported large clouds of black smoke above their houses.

One resident, Peter Beal, said: "I was cooking in the kitchen when there was a massive explosion. The house shook and there was a crash, which I think was something hitting my roof.

"My wife and I got out straight away."
