Drivers caught out in crackdown

Police have caught 59 people who were not wearing seat belts during a road safety campaign in a Derbyshire town.

Officers said 22 of those were issued with a £60 fine and 37 were given warnings in the recent Operation Safedrive at Ilkeston and Cotmanhay.

One driver was fined £30 for having illegally tinted front door windows. And one person was issued with a summons for using a mobile phone.

The campaign was set up to address residents' concerns.

The project, carried out by the casualty reduction and enforcement support team (CREST) targeted motorists on South Street in Ilkeston and Cotmanhay Road in Cotmanhay.

Ian Windmill, CREST supervisor, said: "As part of the Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership we are working to increase the profile of general road safety, not just speed detection.

"We're looking to utilise expertise and local knowledge to target the problem areas as designated by the community and the neighbourhood officers."
