Carnival organisers issue warning

Troublemakers have been told to stay away from Derby's Caribbean Carnival this weekend.

The event at Osmaston Park involves a lively procession on Saturday and a family day on Sunday.

Organisers said they feared a small group of people from rival gangs in the city may cause trouble and have written to them telling them to stay away.

The carnival will be monitored by police and stewards who will use mobile CCTV cameras and metal detectors.

Stewards may also search revellers as they enter the Osmaston Park site on Sunday.

Supt Jack Atwal said: "Unfortunately since last year's event we still have a small group of individuals who have continued to cause concern with their links to gang activity.

"We are well used to running operations like this on a regular basis for big events in the city and we will have adequate resources in place."

The event has been organised by the Derby West Indian Community.
