Weapons handed in during amnesty

More than 100 guns and knives have been handed over to police during two weeks of a month-long weapons amnesty.

A total of 49 guns and 69 knives have been surrendered at police stations across Derbyshire.

The amnesty was organised by police and the Derby Community Safety Partnership after the death of Kadeem Blackwood, Derby's first teenage shooting victim.

Every gun handed in during Derby's first ever amnesty will be made safe by armed response officers.

Sharon Squires, from the Community Safety Partnership, said: "This is the first time that a gun amnesty has been set up in the city and we are pleased with the response from the public so far.

"Every gun and knife handed that is handed into the police is one less that can be potentially used on the streets of Derby."
