Guns and knives in amnesty haul

Weapons amnesty
The gun and knife amnesty will run for four weeks

Twenty-six guns and 25 knives were handed in during the first week of a gun and knife amnesty in Derby.

A Derby city councillor called for the amnesty after the killing of 15-year-old Kadeem Blackwood, the first teenage victim of a shooting in the city.

Guns collected ranged from a shotgun to imitation and air weapons as well as a variety of ammunition.

Every gun handed in during the amnesty, which lasts until 12 July, will be made safe by officers.

Det Insp Rob Massey said: "This is a great opportunity for people who may have a knife or any sort of firearm in their possession to hand it in.

"People carry weapons for a variety of reasons whether it was apparent self protection, for kudos or through peer pressure but whatever the reason there is no excuse.

"Carrying a knife or a gun can lead to someone being hurt or killed or with the person in possession being arrested and going to prison."
