Ill man confined to bed by damp

A chronically-ill Derbyshire man says he is confined to his bedroom due to the damp in his council bungalow.

Mould has spread throughout John Frost's bungalow in Alfreton and doctors have told him it could aggravate his lung disease.

Mr Frost's wife Christine has to clean the mould in the lounge and kitchen.

Rykneld Homes, which looks after the bungalow for North East Derbyshire District Council, said it had fitted an extractor fan.

Mr Frost, who is under doctor's orders not to go into the living room, said: "It's not fair on Chris that she has to do everything like this. It's not fair."

Steps taken

In a statement Rykneld Homes, which maintains the building, said: "Condensation was evident and small amounts of black mould were noticed..."

"Repairs were ordered to 'top up' the insulation in the loft area..."

"The extractor fan was fitted as a a gesture of goodwill."

There have also been five visits to the bungalow by council officials.

But Mrs Frost said none of these measures had improved the situation and she had to scrub the kitchen floor with two buckets of bleach to get rid of the black slime.

The couple do not want to leave their bungalow, which is warden-controlled.

Mrs Frost said: "It's our home and we shouldn't have to move to be comfortable. We shouldn't have to do that."

The council said the property would be inspected soon.
