Christmas abandoned dogs warning

There has been a sharp rise in the number of dogs found abandoned in Derbyshire.

Derby City Council said the number of animals its wardens have picked up in the city had doubled since last year.

Wardens believe many older dogs may be being abandoned during the festive season to make way for new puppies or because of the financial crisis.

In 2007 wardens picked up 21 dogs in November but for the same period this year the number rose to 48.

The council said December's figure was expected to be equally high.

Councillor Bob Troup, cabinet member for housing and public protection, said: "I would urge anyone who really wants a dog to wait until the spring when the weather improves, take their time and choose carefully.

"Dogs don't come fully trained. Prospective owners should be aware of the time and commitment that is needed to properly train and look after a new pet."
