Allotment group's search for land

A Derbyshire allotment group which has been meeting for the past eight years has put out an appeal - for some land.

The Little Eaton Allotment Association, which meets regularly to discuss gardening and growing, has never managed to find a suitable home.

Erewash Borough Council has now stepped in to help the budding gardeners, and is asking for landowners to lease an allotment site to the group.

The association's Lydia Barton said some land would make their Christmas.

Community garden

"It would be the best Christmas present ever to find some land in readiness for planting in spring 2009," said Ms Barton.

"Ideally we would need about four acres of land, to accommodate the 35 people on the waiting list.

"This wouldn't just be an old-fashioned allotment site, more like a community garden for everyone to use," she added.

Councillor Carol Hart, deputy leader and lead member for community services at Erewash Borough Council, said it was important to help the allotment group.

"We would love to hear from any landowners who will consider a short-term lease arrangement to enable these committed members to turn their dreams into a real project.

"Allotments can provide so much for local people and there is no doubt there will be many benefits for the wider Little Eaton community if we can find willing landowners - not least the provision of locally grown, fresh produce."
