Thieves take bikes from new track

Thieves have stolen bikes and equipment worth up to £10,000 from Derby's new BMX track.

They broke into a secure container at the Alvaston Park track over the weekend and stole 17 bikes, 40 helmets and 100 pairs of gloves.

The track had recently been updated to national standards by the city council's Cycle Derby team, which runs children's coaching sessions.

Mark Smith of Cycle Derby said it meant its events could not go ahead.

'Detrimental effect'

He said: "We had a Christmas classic event coming up for the local children which has had to now be postponed obviously.

"The coaching has had to be stopped because again, we haven't got the bikes to provide to the children.

"So it's had quite a detrimental effect on everything we do, really."

Police have recovered some of the bikes but most of the equipment is still missing.

Each bike costs about £300 and a helmet is worth £50.
