Speeding drivers face crackdown

Police in Derbyshire are beginning a crackdown on motorists speeding through a village in the north of the county.

It follows complaints from residents in Whitwell about vehicles using the village as a through road to the M1 motorway and excessive speeding.

Lorry drivers using the village as a short cut to the M1 will be monitored.

The number of speed patrols carried out by officers will increase and checks will be made on vehicles which are using the road illegally.

PCSO Katie Lee said: "Some of the roads through Whitwell are very narrow and speeding along them is dangerous not only for the motorist, but also for any pedestrians.

"Tall HGVs are permitted to go through the village to avoid low bridges on the route to the M1.

"However, some HGVs that could go under the bridge are using Whitwell as a short cut and that is not permitted."
