Inquiry after arrested man dies

A 38-year-old man has died in police custody after being arrested in Derby, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said.

The man was arrested by Derbyshire Police in the early hours of Wednesday in Osmaston Road on suspicion of drinking and driving.

He became ill while in custody and was treated by paramedics after he arrived at St Mary's Wharf police station.

The man was taken to Derbyshire Royal Infirmary where he was pronounced dead.

A Home Office pathologist will carry out a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.

The IPCC said it was investigating the death.
