Unwelcome visitors will be asked to leave the funeral of a student goaded by onlookers moments before he fell to his death, police have said.

There will be a strong police presence at the funeral next Monday of Shaun Dykes, 17, from Kilburn, Derbyshire.

He plunged 60ft (18.2m) to his death from a car park at the Westfield shopping centre in Derby.

Some of the crowd who gathered as police negotiators tried to coax him down, urged him to jump.

Widespread outrage

Chief Constable Mick Creedon condemned their actions as "totally abhorrent".

Shaun's friends and teachers from Heanor Gate Science College where he was studying maths, business studies and politics are expected to attend the funeral.

Police said Shaun's family want the funeral to remain private.

A police spokeswoman said: "There will be a police presence and (unwelcome guests) will be asked to leave."

There was widespread outrage at the comments of onlookers who stopped to watch as negotiators spent three hours trying to persuade Shaun not to jump.

Mr Creedon said afterwards: "It disgusts me to think of their motivation and their lack of compassion towards a fellow human being obviously in distress."
