Help at hand for wheelchair man

A war veteran who was told he did not qualify for an electric wheelchair despite having both legs amputated has been inundated with offers of help.

Alf Booth, 78, from Heanor, Derbyshire was told by Derbyshire County Primary Care Trust that he did not "fit the criteria" for an electric vehicle.

Several people have since said they have a wheelchair they could donate.

Mr Booth may also qualify for a custom-made chair as a result of his National Service with the Royal Air Force.

Diane Morley, from the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, said she was hopeful Mr Booth would be successful.

'Great news'

"He can apply to the regiment he was in and that applies to anybody in National Service if they need any help.

"We go to their regiment and any other charities we think can help us to raise the money for whatever they need."

Mr Booth described it as "great news".

He said: "I just can't get over it. I never expected anything like that response. It's overwhelming."

His daughter Rachel Bebbington said: "From the bottom of our hearts we thank everyone who responded. We're very grateful."
