Cannabis plants destroyed in fire

Scene of fire
Witnesses described hearing small explosions

A cannabis factory has gone up in smoke in a Derby house fire.

Fire crews were called to Sutherland Road in Normanton in the early hours of the morning and initially struggled to reach the blaze because of parked cars.

After getting into the house, crews discovered about 300 cannabis plants in the attic area, which is where the fire is believed to have begun.

One adult and two children escaped uninjured. Police said they had launched an investigation.

Witnesses said they heard small explosions and "popping" before the flames broke through the roof.
