Fundraising starts for injured DJ

Dean Willis
Mr Willis needs more than £8,000 to come back home

Fundraising to bring home a Derby DJ who was badly injured in a holiday road accident has begun.

Dean Willis, 23 and known as DJ Beenie, was knocked off his moped in Malia, Crete and broke his leg and ribs.

Mr Willis is being treated in hospital under EU regulations but does not have the £8,600 needed to return to Derby as he did not have travel insurance.

Family and friends are holding a barbeque at Sinfin Moor Social Club on Sunday in a bid to raise funds.

Mr Willis also suffered facial injuries which needed stitches, and burns when his moped caught fire.

'Shocking' accident

Family friend Vanessa Morrison said he needed to come home.

"Over there he's got friends but they are flying home so he will end up on his own," she said.

"He needs his family and his family wants to be there but can't because it costs a lot of money to get over there."

Mr Willis' sister Sarah Allen said: "It's really shocking... you don't expect it to happen."

She said £7,000 was needed for the flight since he would require a stretcher, £1,200 for an on-board doctor and £400 for an ambulance to take him from Heathrow Airport to hospital.

Kelly Ostler-Coyle, from the Association of British Insurers, said: "Obviously it is devastating when you are injured abroad.

"However, when you are injured abroad and you do have insurance, it can be a lot less costly."
