Appeal after Greek island death

The family of a British teenager who died in Greece has appealed for anyone who was in the area where he collapsed to come forward.

Matthew Cryer, 17, from Killamarsh, Derbyshire, was on his first holiday abroad without his family.

The incident happened in the resort of Laganas on Zante, also known as Zakynthos, a week ago.

His family said in a statement released by Derbyshire Police, they desperately wanted to find out what had happened.

"We are all devastated by the death of Matthew and are being supported by family and friends," they said.

"We would urge anyone who was there that night to get in touch with the police in their own area, as we hope the coroner's office here in the UK will conduct a full and thorough investigation.

"We ourselves are aware of several witnesses, from various places in the UK, who are willing to make statements about the circumstances of Matthew's death, both through the media and from people who have contacted us themselves."

Sheffield Wednesday fan Matthew had just completed a college course and was hoping to take up an advanced apprenticeship in petrochemical project management in September.

He was working at a Burger King branch in Sheffield to pay his way through college and was named employee of the month in May.

Zakynthos, also known as Zante, is part of the Ionian island chain lying off mainland Greece's west coast.
