Detectors to be used at carnival

About 12,000 people are expected to attend the carnival

Portable metal detectors will be used to deter gang violence at Derby's Caribbean carnival, police have said.

A parade will travel through the city on Saturday as part of the carnival which will end with a family day at Osmaston Park on Sunday.

Organisers have written to a number of potential troublemakers telling them they are not welcome at the event.

Police and stewards will be patrolling on both days and mobile CCTV cameras will also be used.

'Cohesive event'

Det Supt Peter Lewis said: "I acknowledge that it's disappointing when the actions of a minority can impinge on events such as these but we have had fantastic co-operation from the organisers.

"They are sending a clear message that people who seek to use the carnival to cause trouble are unwelcome and should stay away."

George Mighty, chairman of the Derby West Indian Community Association, said the group had a duty of care to ensure the event was safe.

"We will not tolerate any lawlessness and we do not want any undesirables coming to what is a family celebration. People interested in trouble are not welcome.

"This is a great event in the city's calendar and a very cohesive event which bridges the generational gap," he said.
