University towers to get facelift

Impression of what one of the buildings will look like
The project should be completed by 2010

Three Derby landmarks are about to get a facelift.

A total of £13.5m is being spent giving the north, south and east towers of the city's university a makeover and the project should be completed by 2010.

The towers of the university have dominated the city's skyline for almost 50 years.

Over the next 18 months they will be re-glazed and solar panels will be added to one of them to help cut the university's energy bills.

New window units will also be installed, along with a roof screen to partially hide features at the top of the building.

Some noise and disruption is anticipated, but the university said it has taken measures to limit this.
