Woman's long wait for wheelie bin

A Derby woman who has been without a wheelie bin for five weeks has been told it could be a year before she gets a new one because of a shortage.

Abigail Daily from Normanton, who has three-year-old twins and is expecting another baby, had her own bin stolen.

She said she had to rely on friends and family to take her rubbish to the tip.

Derby City Council has apologised, saying a fire at the only British supplier and increased demand meant there was a long waiting list.

Ms Daily discovered the bin was missing during a Bank Holiday weekend.

'Swamped'

When she rang the council at the end of May she was told a replacement bin would be delivered in 15 days but she is still waiting.

Derby City Council's cabinet member responsible for bins Mike Carr promised to investigate Ms Daily's problem.

He said: "There's been a huge demand from eastern Europe, we think fuelled by EU grants and things, to improve their recycling. They're putting in massive orders so the manufacturers have all been swamped.

"And to compound that the British manufacturer has had a major fire and they're not producing any."
