New weapons to tackle knife crime

Police in north Derbyshire have begun using airport-style metal detectors to tackle knife crime.

Officers used the portable arches to check if revellers were carrying weapons in Buxton on Friday and in Chapel-en-le-Frith on Saturday night.

One man was arrested for being drunk and disorderly. Another man was arrested on suspicion of drugs offences in Chapel-en-le-Frith.

High visibility patrols were also carried out in Buxton.

Sgt Gill McGrath said: "I was pleased with the response of the town's licensees, who welcomed the visits. We hope to do similar targets again as part of Operation Relentless.

"Knife crime is not a common problem in our area, but having metal detecting arches helps officers keep our communities safe."

The operation will run until 27 July.
