Gadget aids wheelie bin manoeuvre

A student who designed a gadget to make wheelie bins easier to manoeuvre is showcasing her invention in London.

Sarah Williams, 21, from Ashbourne in Derbyshire, hopes her invention will help elderly people to put the bins out for collection.

The design technology student from the University of Derby has designed a frame which moves on castors and clamps on to the bin.

The device also reduces the need to tip the bin before it can be pushed.

Ms Williams said she was inspired to design the wheelie bin after her grandmother sprained her wrist as she put out her weekly rubbish for collection.

She said: "Gran got injured putting out the rubbish and when the bins are full they are awkward to manoeuvre. When I carried out market research I found many elderly and disabled people struggled to move the wheelie bins especially when they were full of waste."

She said she hopes the invention - which is her final year project at the university - will eventually be manufactured for sale.
