Power cut after pole burnt down

Hundreds of homes in north Derbyshire were left without power overnight after an electricity pole was burnt down.

The power to about 1,750 homes in Grassmoor, near Clay Cross, went off at about 0100 BST on Tuesday.

Engineers worked through the night to restore the electricity and most homes now have power.

Andy Barrow, spokesman from electricity company Central Networks, said the offenders may have been trying to steal copper wiring.

"This is highly dangerous," said Mr Barrow.

"This is an 11,000-volt transformer - that's electricity that is 50 times higher than the voltage coming into your house.

"As the wires were coming down, there would have been flashing, arcing and sparking.

"It's a highly dangerous thing."
