Ex-theatre damaged during repairs

The damage to the building
There are still plans to refurbish the building

A former theatre - which people feared could be knocked down - has been damaged during repair work.

The building on Green Lane in Derby used to be the Hippodrome prior to becoming a bingo hall.

Part of the roof collapsed on Friday and a section of a wall had to be taken out, amid fears that the building might fall on to neighbouring properties.

Richard Williams from Derby City Council said the building could still be used in the future.

He said: "The building is still capable of being refurbished. But we have to go through these stages of taking bits away, seeing what the damage is, and then deciding what to do from there.

"But we will make the building safe for the public as quickly as we can and then we'll move on to the next stage of working out what then has to be done to put the building back into order."
