New cinema described as 'eyesore'
Westfield shopping centre in Derby
The cinema has been called "a blot on the landscape"
A new cinema in Derby city centre has been described as "obtrusive" by the local civic society.

Critics say the multi-screen cinema above the Westfield shopping centre is "an eyesore".

But developers Westfield said opponents should consider "the entire building" as a boost to the city.

A Westfield spokesman said fitting out at the cinema in the Eagle Centre had not been completed and it was possible the exterior appearance could change.

'Very obtrusive'

Debbie Longridge, who lives opposite the new cinema, said: "It has spoilt our view.

"Before we had a lovely view of church spires and Victorian houses and rolling landscapes behind the hills but now it's just a blot on the landscape."

Maxwell Craven, of the Derby Civic Society, said: "It is big and plain and very obtrusive."

Westfield spokesman Neil Huntington said: "People have to consider the whole building. It is quite a major statement on the southern side of the city.

"I think that when people start to consider the whole development they will begin to see what advantages it brings to the city centre."
