Student portrait of Duke unveiled

A new portrait of the Duke of Devonshire by a Derbyshire student has been unveiled at Chatsworth House.

Long Eaton art student Matthew Cox, 18, requested to paint the Duke following several visits to the stately home.

He presented the painting to the 12th Duke of Devonshire, Peregrine Cavendish on Tuesday morning.

The three-quarter length portrait will be on show alongside work by Rembrandt and Lucian Freud at the house for the next three months.

'Great future'

The art student said he did not realise that his work was going to be displayed at Chatsworth House.

He said: "I have loved Lucien Freud's work for years so to actually go to Chatsworth to see one of the largest private collections and to have my work there is amazing."

The Duke of Devonshire, said: "It was a pleasure to sit for Matthew. He was friendly, calm, professional and on time. I cannot say whether his portrait of me is a good likeness or not; that is for others to decide.

"I am sure he has a great future ahead of him."

Peregrine Cavendish inherited the title after his father's death in 2004.
