People in Derby are being warned they could face a fine if they are caught dropping food for pigeons.
City council officials said food left for pigeons attracts rats and makes areas look unsightly.
The authority also wants to stop a boom in numbers of the birds, which it claims can cause a hazard to pedestrians and damage buildings.
Officials said people could soon be fined £50 if they are caught dropping the food or any litter in the city.
Public health officers will be handing out leaflets explaining the problems pigeons can cause as part of the city's Big Spring Clean initiative.
