A 23-year-old man died when his car was in collision with an unmarked police car in Derbyshire.

The victim, from Chesterfield, was driving an Audi which was in collision with a police Vauxhall Corsa on the A632 in Matlock on Sunday morning.

A passenger in the Audi was treated for leg and facial injuries, and two police officers suffered minor injuries.

Police said they were not racing to an emergency, and the Audi was not being targeted by officers.

'Routine inquiries'

The crash will now be investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

The accident happened shortly after 0900 GMT.

A Derbyshire Police spokesman said: "Derbyshire constabulary can confirm that the Audi was not the subject of any police action prior to the collision.

"The police vehicle involved was being driven on routine inquiries and was not responding to any emergency."
